The Judges' Special Awards


Our competition judges gave many scarecrows a Special Award for some particular merit shown by the entry. Here is our gallery of Special Awards. As you go round the trail, you will recognise them as they will be sporting a yellow rosette.

In the Children’s Competition, Number 52, ‘Brian’ received a Special Award for putting on “A great display, with a traditional scarecrow and good use of the surrounding garden”.



Among the Children’s Organisations, number 56, ‘Holmwood is Magic’, was given a Special Award “ a fantastic effort, showing great sensitivity in the sculpting the face, plus an informative poster showing how their scarecrow was made”.



The Judges commended number 45, the National Energy Foundation’s ‘Climate Crow’ in the Organisations and Businesses category and gave it a Special Award for its “Quirkiness” and for being so “Well made and intriguing.” This organization was applauded for having made a particular effort to engage with their local community.




The judges were impressed by the number, variety and design ability of the entries in the Adults and Families competition and they gave 10 Special Awards to recognise the high level of creativity and talent evidenced by all of the entries.

Number 2, ‘Wicked Witch’ received a Special Award for being “particularly scary” and for her unusual pose, which was “flying” in the trees.





Todd Family Favourites, number 4, was considered to be a particularly “good all round effort”, and the judges “loved the dog”.



Number 5, ‘Scarecrow of Liberty’ was judged to be “very witty and clever” and the poem was thought to be very apposite.



‘legs Nolan’, number 7, received his Special Award for his “unusual and quirky” take on scarecrow design.



Of number 12, ‘Hagrid’, the judges remarked that “a lot of effort clearly went into this scarecrow, which has great scale and an excellently sculpted face”.



 ‘Men at Work’, number 18, receivd its Special Award for its humour and its kerb appeal.



The judges felt that number 24, ‘Unexpected Landing’ also had “great humour”.




‘Legless’, number 29, was also thought to be delightfully funny and the judges “loved the fact that he is in a wheelbarrow”.



‘The Sentinel’ number 40, received a Special Award for a “great effort, with good use of the hedge to represent a horse.”


Likewise, Number 42, ‘Clyde’ received a Special Award for being a more traditional scarcrow that was particularly well made with great attention to detail.


Finally, number 55, ‘Ready for Bed’ was commended for “great work on the face”.
